dropped him at the university of michigan for debate camp for three weeks and thought he would be okay. wrong. he called me up two days later and felt dumb. he said the other kids at camp were far ahead of him and started yelling at me for not getting him in a better school. problem is, that he's already in the best school in our city. he says, i don't know what they're preparing us for but it's not college. my poor kid has discovered something we've known for years, not all school districts are created equal. there are at love factors for this, of course. but the one i find most telling is the correlation between poverty and academic achievement. according to the u.s. census bureau, grand rapids, michigan, has a 28.9% poverty rate amongst school age children. only 30% of students who take the michigan exam were proficient in math, 43% proficient in reading. when you look at the poorer cities in my state you'll find some numbers below 10%. conversely, the 10 wealthiest districts have scores in the mid 70s up to 90. how is that leaving no child behind? this correlation, not unique to mi

to graduate with honors -- on to graduate with honors from the university of michigan law school. he excelled at michigan while waiting tables far local fraternity. he is little known today, but walden really inspired a generation of african-american lawyers, including vernon jordan, lawyer, the counsel to presidents whom i'm sure some of you have heard of. overcan call -- jordan called walden so impressive. he said, quote, i wanted to be a lawyer just like walden. i wanted to walk like him and talk like him and hang out my shingle on auburn street just like walden. above all else pragmatists like walden and the black college presidents prioritized voting rights as the path to black power. and here we see walden challenging the so-called white primary. the laws, the tradition of excluding african-americans from the vote in georgia and elsewhere. and here is the result of his activism. in 1946 after the fall of the white primary, blacks lined up all over the streets in atlanta eager to exercise the franchise. and yet walden and other pragmatists were called accommodationists, uncle toms. and s

-- that is a look at "the wall street journal" headlined as women. taking a look as we take the next call. michigan, a cafe, a democrat. caller: i can give you an example of taxes. i am going to be cashing out of my retirement. it is very little, from the state of michigan. 30% between the irs and the federal tax and then i am probably going to be penalized for drawing unemployment -- illegal in the state of michigan. what it will do is amount to 50% tax. the current job that i have -- there are a lot of people will come into the store and buying, and a majority of them are well- to-do. if my employer is what to do. she does not share her wealth. i do not see any poor people coming into the store purchasing anything. and i will be heading off a bank to a food pantry in an hour and a half and i don't see what the people at the food pantry, either. -- will see people at the food pantry. -- wealthy people of the food pantry. there are a lot of well-to-do people in the county and i don't see any philanthropy to the most part. we need to close the loops. in terms of other countries, at the very least th

of denver, and the university of michigan. he has a long list of books. the next call is from mary ann, a democrat from virginia. caller: i keep hearing over and over again from the republicans that the rich pay 35% in taxes. i would like to know from the man from heritage the name of just one company that actually pays 35% in taxes after deductions and loopholes. if you cannot give me the name of one company, everything you say is disingenuous. guest: she has a good point. the statutory rate is 35%. it is about 4% more than local rates. with the company, you have lobbyists and different directions. the effective rate is closer to 18%. if you are a new company, you have not had the time to lobby the codes for ethanol tax credits or whatever it is. you are paying the full rate as a new company starting up. that is a disincentive for job growth. speaker boehner and president obama have said they would like to lower the tax rate. it is now the highest in the industrialized world. they would like to eliminate a lot of the deductions and credits so there is more incentive for these companie
